Doctors and scientists are now discovering the pH secret. The power of hydrogen is the measurement of pH. The pH scale ranges from 1-14, with 7 being neutral. This potential of hydrogen is either acid, below 7, or alkaline, above 7. What we eat, drink and are exposed to through the environment ultimately affects our internal pH. The body pH should be slightly alkaline, just like our blood. Healthy blood pH is 7.365.
The Standard American Diet is SAD. It is a highly acid diet with an emphasis on protein, sugars, and unhealthy fats. Even a diet high in whole grains and lots of fruits creates excess acid. Eating these foods creates a lot of metabolic acid residue that the body stores away in fat cells.
Acid foods comprise 80% or our diet, when they should make up 20%. Green leafy vegetables contain all the alkaline minerals and chlorophyll necessary to buffer these acids, but we simply do not eat enough of them. We should be eating at least 10-15 different fresh fruits and vegetables daily.
To make matters worse, we drink too many acid beverages including tea, coffee, sports drinks, bottled water, pop and diet pop. Most bottled waters are filtered tap water. The filtering process removes all the chlorine and lye. Lye has a pH of 14, but it tastes bad. Bottled water has no minerals left after processing, and is a lifeless acid water. All of these contribute to the acid load that the body has to eliminate.
Acid waste also builds up in the body from our lifestyle choices. Smoking, stress, intense exercise and negative thoughts all increase the acid levels in the body. Insufficient hydration levels, air pollution, and exposure to the many metal and chemical man-made toxins in our environment also make the body more acidic.
